How to change other people's beliefs

The 1st 4-minute mile

Is there anyone who ever remembers
Changing their mind from the paint on a sign?

John Mayer - Belief

Not me.

And I’ll bet you haven’t either.

Because it takes more than a protestor’s sign to change someone’s belief.

So, what DOES it take?

Emotion + proof.

That’s it.

If you want to change the world, you have to change one mind at a time. And to do that, you need to show that the change is possible while appealing to their emotions.

The world is shaped by what you believe is true and what you believe isn't true.

You’re probably stuck because you find comfort in your beliefs. You lock yourself in and that stops you from reaching your potential.

You start coping, not creating.

(I wrote here about why it’s important to find your beliefs, and I wrote here about why it’s important to share them)

The only way to break out of that cycle is to change what you believe is possible. Then, and only then, will you be able to change your habits and actions.

And the quickest way to change is to see someone doing what you thought was not possible.

Case in point…

On May 6, 1954, British athlete Roger Bannister made history by becoming the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, clocking in at 3:59.4 at Iffley Road Track in Oxford.

This shattered a long-held belief that such a feat was impossible and dangerous for the human body.

But here’s the crazy part…

Bannister's record stood for only 46 days before Australian John Landy broke it with a time of 3:57.9. Since then, over 1,700 athletes have also run sub-four-minute miles, demonstrating how Bannister's achievement opened the floodgates for future runners.

Visceral example.

In my life, the best way I’ve found to break my limiting beliefs around business and personal achievement is community.

Joining the right communities can SHATTER what you thought was possible.

Why?

Because, in the right communities, you will find people who have achieved more than you ever imagined. And they are sharing their stories about how they go there.

Instantly, all of your excuses are worthless.

Here is someone, probably a lot like you, that is PROVING your theories wrong. All that stuff IS POSSIBLE.

  • Salvaging a failing relationship and making in thrive

  • A $50k month as a soloprenuer

  • A 6-pack in 6 months

It’s not impossible, you’re just in the wrong echo chambers.

By seeing and hearing stories (storytelling) from people you know (emotional connection), you’ll change beliefs on a dime.

Tomorrow’s email will be about how to tell those stories.

Cheers,

Swanagan
