Why I walk
Walking is the BEST for ideas:
Huey Lewis came up all the lyrics to "Power of Love" while on a quick walk
Nietzsche got the idea for "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" during a walk in the Swiss Alps
Beethoven, wrote his Sixth Symphony while on a walk in the countryside
But it’s even better for connection.
In high school I used to walk 3-4 miles every night with my Dad.
Why?
Well, the Ray’s have a family history of heart disease (high blood pressure).
And Dad had read in Reader’s Digest that walking 2 miles a day was good for heart health.
Luckily enough, there was a huge hill right across from our house, with a road that wound up it to a neighborhood on top. If you walked up the hill, looped through the neighborhood and circled back, it was exactly 2.5 miles.
Perfect.
So, every night we would cross the road and head up the hill.
It was usually pretty boring (besides the time we adopted the family cat as a kitten - someone had thrown her out of a car window into the ditch) and we would talk about stuff like:
What direction Dad wanted to take with the family business
What I would do when I graduated
Etc.
But, it was amazing.
I lost 60 lbs and got closer to my Dad.
Even though he’s gone now, I’ll always have the life learnings I got from those deep conversations.
Some of my favorite memories of all time.
Go take a walk.
You won’t regret it.
And I’ll bet you’ll come up with some new online content ideas (also, maybe a cat).
Cheers,
Swanagan
