Stop creating content, start a religion
World building part deux
Forget coaching offers, growth content, or obsessing about followers.
If you want to build a business on easy mode…
Create a world.
Be the category.
Own a word.
Immerse your fans in an experience every time they see your name.
This is what all of your favorite creators and brands do:
Star Wars
Liquid Death
Mr. Beast
Alex Hormozi
Oprah Winfrey
They are all building worlds.
As I build out my vision for the future, I’ve been digging into worldbuilding more and more.
And man, I am getting a lot of energy out of it.
For one, it’s different from everybody else’s content. Everyone else is talking about growth strategies, and selling offers that teach growth strategies.
This is a short term game. You can’t play it forever.
Building a world is playing the long game.
And it’s one I can and will play forever.
Here’s the latest brick in the world I’m building: the Ethos.
I laid out the components of a digital world in this article:
Macrocosm
Ethos
Antagonist
Biosphere
Ethos is essentially your world’s religion.
As it turns out, the foundations of religion typically boil down to 4 core steps:
A main message that holds everything together (ie, Otimalism)
The shalls and shall-nots (ie, be resiliently optimistic, not pessimistic)
Lore and myths that make it real by telling stories that teach the beliefs above
Rituals or actions that embody the beliefs and bring everyone together (ie, write everyday, and work on your fitness)
When building your world, you can’t skip the Ethos.
It’s the principles the people in your world value.
"People like us do things like this" as Seth Godin would say.
Your actions are a bi-product of the big vision.
And each piece of content should be a bi-product of the vision.
So get out there and start building.
Cheers,
Swanagan
