You are the niche
I've got a new spin on this, I promise!
It seems like 95% of people on X started last year because of a Dan Koe video.
And that’s amazing!
There are inflection points that certain creators initiate, and it goes in cycles. We are in a decidedly Dan Koe cycle right now.
Another example of this phenomenon is Billy Strings.
He plays bluegrass music, but is currently packing out stadiums and bringing in hundreds of thousands of new fans into the bluegrass community.
Why? Because he is tapping into the same message that Dan Koe is preaching.
You are the niche
Billy Strings has synthesized the high energy and authentic roots of bluegrass with the heavy metal rock aesthetic. His stage shows remind you of a Motley Crue concert while he plays original songs in the style of Doc Watson (folk musician whose heyday was in the 70s).
It’s wild.
But he’s embraced his own unique interests and made something totally new that resonates.
In your own journey of creativity, you can do the same. Just pick the top 3 things you’ve been doing for the last 2-20 years and can do for the next 40 without getting burned out.
Rogan likes UFC, comedy, and fitness
Naval likes startups, tech, and philosophy
Musk likes memes, engineering, and space exploration
Operating at the intersection of your interests and increasing your skillset is how you become a niche of one.
You need to do the same.
For another reference, here are my interests: Music, comedy, fitness, philosophy, engineering, and business (sales and marketing).
If I had to choose the top 3 it would probably be: music, fitness, philosophy.
My content strategy and stuff I write about has been moving toward these pillars slowly. And it’s not shocking that the stuff people have resonated with the most is the content from these pillars.
So, take 30 minutes of dedicated focus and nail this down for yourself.
Don’t force anything. Just do an audit of a few things:
What did you do the most as a kid?
What have you spent the most time and money on in the last 5 years?
What activity do you do to relax productively (e.g., not watching Netflix)
It’s a super high leverage activity and worth the time.
I’m excited to hear about what you come up with.
