How to make $12m a year
Using a banjo microphone
I played music for the corporate team of a Fortune 500 company last night.
The CEO for this company is a dude that made $12,615,612 last year. No doubt, there is an army of sycophants ready to execute his bidding at the drop of a hat.
And he was talking through my banjo mic.
Ok, I’ll explain real quick if that comes across as a weird sentence.
I play music with 7-8 bands in my town, on a fill-in basis. It’s a resort town, so there are a lot of fancy parties that pay really well if you play music. And, there is huge demand for bluegrass right now, hence, the banjo.
Anyway, if the guests want to make a short speech they usually use our sound system.
And, the mic I was playing my banjo through was at the right height for this dude (I’m on the taller side, he was on the shorter).
As I was standing there, listening to the address, I was thinking “Man, this guy makes well over $12m a year more than me, and here we are breathing the same air, with the same amount of time each day, using the same microphone.”
It brought this quote to mind:
"The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do." – Bill Phillips.
There’s this mental block that can grow in your mind. “This person has all these privileges. They were born with a silver spoon. There’s no way I can get to where they are.”
If that’s all there is to it, you’ll never pull yourself out of your situation. After all, you can’t very well choose who or where you are born, can you?
This line of thinking is debilitating.
It stops you from taking the actions that will move you closer to your goal.
Sure, some people are born with more privilege than you. But you can close the gap.
By taking action. Smart action. Leveraged action.
Become the most optimal version of yourself EVERYDAY.
Work on becoming 1% better in each area that matters for your goals.
Don’t make excuses; make it happen.
And who knows, someday you may be using a banjo mic to address your own corporate team.
