How to find your people online

Keep the main thing the main thing

As my dad always said, “You gotta keep the main thing the main thing.”

And here’s the main thing of outreach:

You gotta know who you’re reaching out to before how.

This is not exclusive to making connections.

It is a must for paid work as well.

Life is a living hell if you don’t vibe with your client.

But either way, that’s why I spent so much time talking about ICPs last week.

It’s super important to reach out to people that:

  • Inspire you

  • Are great to work with

  • Make you want to build long term goals

  • Give you energy and get energy from you

This is a long term game.

And like all long-term games, you have to start small.

Follower count

Don’t start with DMing Elong Musk and then get upset when you don’t get a reply.

Engage with accounts two steps ahead of you instead of the top ones.

Start by reaching out to people that are within your follower range.

The steps are usually:

  • 0-200

  • 200-2000

  • 2,000-20,000 followers

Once you get above a certain point, audience-wise, you will gain leverage.

Leverage to reach out to anybody basically and get a good response.

Where to find them

There are 2 main ways to find people without using any fancy software tools:

  1. Look at who the accounts you like are following

  2. Look in the comments under big creator posts

Both are great, but I like #2.

Because if people are replying, that means they are trying to grow and would be up for networking.

This way can be really fun.

Make a list in X Premium of those people and start engaging for a week or two.

Leave thoughtful or funny comments. Just don’t be negative.

Think about it like you are meeting people.

The closer to a real life interaction you can make it, the better.

This will build your path forward.

At the end of the day, aim for quality over quantity; one well-targeted message beats 100 cold emails.

Especially if that message is to someone you like.
