The Gorillaz and father-daughter dates

Tactical optimalism

I took my 11-year old daughter on a date last night.

Here’s a few things we did:

  • Went to a record shop and bought an album by her favorite band, The Gorillaz.

  • Walked through a street fair.

  • Got some Insomnia Cookies.

  • Went to Hot Topic and got some more Gorillaz memorabilia.

  • Chick-Fil-A.

  • Checked out some cool basses at the Guitar Center.

  • Blasted Gorillaz way too loud the whole time we were in the car.

It was amazing.

Now that our family has grown to 5, I want to keep having dedicated moments with my daughter.

Especially as she approaches teenage-hood.

She was born when I was 20. And between being in college and starting my career, I haven’t made time for the intentional moments with her like I should’ve.

So, recently I’ve made it a priority.

We are going to do these “dates” (she refuses to call them that, says “we are just going places”) at least once a month.

This is why I’m an optimalist.

I’m optimizing my life for health, wealth, and wisdom for nights just like these.

I will be in good enough financial shape, physical shape, and sound mind to make time for my family.

My daughter will only be 11 years old one time in her life. She won’t want to hang out with me in a couple of years.

So I’m going to take advantage of the time now.

Be in the moment.

Appreciate the little things. Like my ears bleeding from “Feel Good Inc.” at 1,000 dB.

But, here’s the lesson:

Spend dedicated, intentional time with the ones you love.

Life only happens once.

Don’t waste it.

See you tomorrow,

Swanagan
