I biffed a C-suite interview yesterday

Focus on 1 thing at a time

I messed up.

I interviewed for a job yesterday.

Even after I made a rule never to interview again.

In my defense, it was an amazing opportunity!

7-figure revenue startup, extremely high profile team, C-level position, etc.

And I biffed it.

I’ve been on the other side of the call enough times to know how it’ll shake out this time.

Me: “What is the biggest red flag you see about me in this position?”

Interviewer: “Well, most of your experience comes from the manufacturing industry, and not tech. So that gives me pause.”

Fair enough.

But here’s the catch: I told myself in January that I would never interview for a job again.

This was so I’d force myself to focus on my own business.

Burning the ships, if you will.

But, I fell for the shiny new object, and it didn’t even work out.

It felt pretty bad, ngl.

So, I hit the gym, did some heavy deadlifts, journaled, and then booked a discovery call with a potential client.

Now I feel better.

And I’m not going to renege on my principles any time soon.

So, here’s the self-talk that I used to get myself out of the rut and back on the wagon:

You can only do 1 thing exceptionally well at a time.

Doing 1 thing exceptionally well precludes you from doing multiple things.

Alex Hormozi

And there is plenty of time to explore every curiosity.

Just make sure you give each the proper amount of time and focus.

Don't be a donkey (Aesop's fable); you can do everything you want to do. You just need foresight and patience.

- Derek Sivers

Don’t waffle on your principles. Stick with them.

But if you fall off the wagon, hop back on, and use it as a lesson.

See you tomorrow,
