Be like the beaver

Lessons from meditation and chaotic memery

I was meditating this morning using the Headspace app.

Right in the middle of the 11-minute session, a picture of a beaver popped into my head.

Weird, right?

Definitely due to my abysmal meditation skills.

But it went deeper than that.

See, the guided meditation was talking about how small, consistent changes make a huge difference over time.

Between that and all the bober memes (unhinged polish beaver-based memes) that a buddy has been non-stop sending me, those little ecosystem-transforming powerhouses came to mind.

I mean, check it out.

A single beaver dam can:

  • Be up to 775 meters long, which is about the length of seven football fields

  • Create a pond holding approximately 70,000 cubic meters of water, equivalent to about 92,000 dump trucks full of water

  • Increase open water area by up to 9 times in certain regions supporting up to 80% of the species in arid regions

All this while reducing agricultural pollution by up to 45%.

Mindblowing.

But no less mindblowing than what you (at 3-4x a beaver size, and at least 2x a smart) can do if you put back into it.

We’ve all heard the Atomic Habit spiel by now.

“1% better every day.”

If you’re like me, it’s tiring as heck.

But there’s a reason it’s popular…

It’s true.

So, instead of regurgitating that old rote again, I’ll just show you how I’m implementing it.

With my ghostwriting business, I’ve been struggling.

My “systems” have been non-existent.

I’ve been waking up, coming up with ideas for my clients on the spot, and posting immediately.

Unsustainable at best.

And it was catching up to me, stress-wise.

So, I decided to come up with a system that would allow me to bit off chunks of the work each day of the week.

Here’s what I came up with:

  • Sunday

    • Research content and angles

  • Monday

    • Write short form tweets

  • Tuesday

    • Write long form tweets and threads

  • Wednesday

    • Edit short form tweets

  • Thursday

    • Edit long form tweets

  • Friday

    • Last glance and schedule

  • Saturday

    • Idea generation

Now, this gives me the freedom to focus on each part of the process in depth without getting overwhelmed.

I’m loving it so far.

Here’s an example of my ideation sessions for me and my clients:

Now look, this isn’t going to change any ecosystems.

But it is going to allow me to sustainably scale to probably double the clients I can handle now from a workload standpoint.

And you can too.

If you harness the power of the Bober, you can do anything.

Cheers,

Swanagan
