3 strategies to find the people who vibe with your stuff

#3 is goated

If you struggle with defining the target audience for your social media presence, email list, etc, I feel your pain.

Here’s how I figured out who to write to.

━━━━━━━━━ ᨒ↟━━━━━━━━━

The first step in this process is realizing that all online writing is simply marketing.

And as a marketer you really only have 2 jobs:

  • Figure out who you are talking to (audience)

  • Figure out what you are going to say to them (messaging).

So as the first step on your online journey, you have to define your audience.

Before we jump to the strategies, let’s define what an audience is and some of the key traits you are looking for.

I like to define my audience with a single avatar. This makes it easier to pull out the relevant stuff so you can write more specifically to them.

The stuff that will be most relevant is:

  • gender

  • age range

  • key pain points

  • interests and hobbies

  • preferred content types

  • key messaging strategies they respond to

So now we know what to look for, here are the methods to find them.

━━━━━━━━━ ᨒ↟━━━━━━━━━

There are 3 main strategies I’ve found:

  1. Finding a proxy audience

  2. Using AI

  3. Writing to a version of myself

1\ Look at the existing audience of a similar creator

Use a successful creator in your niche as a proxy and develop an ideal writing persona (IWP, I made this up) using their audience.

If you are a systems and framework-sharing creator, go look at Ben Meer or Sahil Bloom’s audience.

For 1-person business content, look at Amanda Goetz or Justin Welsh.

Writing and branding, Dakota Robertson or Lara Acosta. You get the picture.

Find the top couple of comments on some of their top posts and those are the type of people that would probably like your stuff too.

2\ Ask ChatGPT

Use this prompt:

"Imagine and describe in detail a hypothetical audience for [insert big creator here]. This should include information like age range, gender distribution, interests and hobbies, key pain points, key messaging strategies, preferred content types, and engagement patterns.”

The more specific your prompt is, the better.

3\ Write for yourself

This is my favorite method.

I started writing to cultivate awareness and learn about what makes me tick... What I believe, what I’m passionate about, and what I need to do to be a clearer thinker.

So, the main person I write to is myself 5-10 years ago.

At the end of the day…

Talk about your transformations.

Share your knowledge.

Your audience will find you.

Cheers,

Swanagan
